Ballymaloe House & Cookery School

The name ‘Ballymaloe’ is a household name in Ireland. The owners of Ballymaloe, the Allen family have built a ‘foodie’ empire with numerous gourmet products and enterprises in operation. Ballymaloe Country House is located in Shanagarry, Co. Cork and is a beautiful boutique hotel which dates back to the 15^th century.


Ballymaloe Cookery School is also well-known across Ireland for its cooking courses that are run by Darina Allen. There is so much to choose from; short courses, afternoon cooking demonstrations, forgotten skills and bespoke courses. The accommodation for students is self catering cottages of which some are delightfully converted 18^th century farm buildings beside Kenoith.

The cottages overlook the orchards and gardens. The pink and whitewashed buildings surround a pretty courtyard filled with honeysuckle, clematis and roses. Some are closer to the sea, another is in an orchard gardens behind the shell house. All the cottages are simply and comfortably furnished and well equipped with all modern conveniences.

Darina Allen is a very well known chef who has influenced Irish cuisine to what it is today. The Gurus Explore team had the pleasure of meeting Darina who showed us two simple recipes that anyone can put together in the kitchen.
