Waterford Crystal
Waterford Crystal is renowned for its craftsmanship and the tour around the factory will amaze you. You will be dazzled by the skill of the Blowers and Master Cutters in making the crystal. The tour is a journey to the home of the world’s finest and most famous crystal. It provides a fantastic day out as there is so much to see and do. Marvel at the luxury pieces commissioned especially for celebrities and dignitaries and indulge in some retail therapy to help you remember your magical journey reflecting on 200 years of glass making.
A Touch of History
George and William Penrose founded Waterford Crystal in 1783 situated in Waterford City. William Penrose decided to sell the company in 1799 where Gatchell seized the opportunity along with other local families, Ramsey and Barcroft to purchase the company and become the new proprietors. Before passing away in 1823, Gatchell made Waterford Glass once again a partnership with his brothers James and Samuel and son in law Joseph Walpole.
Since 1783 Waterford have been producing what is arguably the world’s most beautiful crystal by blowing air with precision through hollow irons into the molten material whereby the depth of the breath influences the shape and depth of the crystal. While the principle hasn’t changed, Waterford has consistently developed advances in technology to produce and refine their crystal products.
Tour
The first stop of the tour is the mould room where you will see the age old craft of mould making using wood moulds used to shape the molten crystal. As you move into the blowing room you will be taken back by the heat, noise and bustling activity that makes this experience more breathtaking as you get closer to the 1300’c furnace. You will be amazed at the craftsmanship as they transform glowing balls of crystal into perfectly exquisite shapes that have taken 200 years to develop.
A highlight for many visitors is the jug makers at work and from Trevor’s effort you can see that this is something that takes many years to master the skill of hand and eye co-ordination.
At the engraving facility you will get a taste for many of the different styles and artifacts Waterford Crystal have produced over many decades. For your chance to be in the draw to win a genuine piece of Waterford Crystal signed by Trevor Cochrane and Master Cutter, simply visit www.thegardengurus.tv and follow the links.
