Episode: # 10 09/06/07
Presenter: Judy Horton

One of the most difficult garden pests to identify would have to be the two-spotted mites because they are so tiny they are almost impossible to see without a magnifying glass.

There are a few signs that you can look out for though. Usually the leaves discolour and they may become silvery, yellowish or grey and they can have a slightly gritty feel. If the problem is really bad you might see fine webbing over the leaves.

Plants are most likely to be affected if they are growing under cover or indoors. Watch out particularly for these pests on plants that are under the eaves or growing beneath overhanging roofs. In winter they sometimes seem to disappear, but they can be hiding in protected spots such as cracks in the bark or at the base of the plant.

The best way to get rid of them is by using Yates Natrasoap. It is an organic insecticidal soap that works by smothering these pests. So that Natrasoap can do a thorough job of smothering, it is important to spray all over and underneath the leaves.

Natrasoap is very gentle and can even be used on food plants. Just wash the crop afterwards and it will be ready to eat.

Misting leaves regularly with water will go a long way towards deterring these pests because the one thing that mites hate almost as much as Natrasoap is getting wet.
