Lawn Care

Episode: #3 07/04/07
Presenter: Dean Boone

There are a lot of lawns around Australia looking a little tired and in need of a being refreshed.

Dean shows you some simple ways to help your lawn survive the drought. Your garden may not be a bowling green but these tips are going to help you keep the lawn you have already got.

Creating a healthy lawn now will mean a stronger and healthier lawn over winter and into spring. A healthier lawn is one of the best defences against bindii. One way to get your lawn looking healthy and growing strongly is to top dress it. Dean likes to use a Yates top soil blend for big areas but for smaller areas it is sometimes easier to use Yates Potting Mix. By covering the grass with a fine layer of soil it will allow the lawn to rebuild and recover after a long hot summer.

To make sure that moisture is going to get to the roots, water in with Yates Granular Wetting Agent. It is best to use a watering can where hoses are banned. If you are not sure, then check with your local council about your water restrictions.

Wetting agents allow increased water infiltration to the roots below and will also improve the lawns vigour over time. Most soils have become hydrophobic because of the drought, meaning they repel water, so this is essential for success.

Another tip that Dean suggests is to sprinkle some Yates Lush lawn seeds onto the grass and gently rake the surface to mix it in with the soil. They will germinate quickly and fill in the gaps while the lawn re-grows. The wetting agent will also help them get the most out of the soil with increased water retention around the new roots.

These simple steps are about using the right products and understanding what your garden needs. If you follow Deans tips your lawn should return to life in about 10 days and this little exercise in TLC will mean you reap the rewards of a healthy lawn at home before winter sets in and avoid those nasty Bindiis come spring.
