Rankins Roses

Episode: #3 07/04/07
Presenter: Melissa King
It is not hard to see why roses are called the Queen of Flowers. When you buy a rose at your local nursery there is a good chance that was grown at Rankins Nursery which has been supplying the best old fashioned and modern varieties for over 20 years. It is also home to the most talked about collection of roses - the Delbards.
The Delbard roses were bred in southern France, grown and nurtured for generations by a family of rose lovers and breeders in the gardens of a 13th century Chateau. Sounds incredibly romantic doesn’t it.
What really sets these roses apart are the splashy over the top colours and they also grow incredibly well in our hot dry conditions. They are hardy, repeat flowering, disease resistant and there is one to suit every garden situation!

Roses in the Painters Collection have real personality. They are all inspired by the great French impressionists and if you look closely the petals it looks like they have been brushed with paint.
The real show off in the group is the Red Intuition TM Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Red Intuition TM‘). It has the most perfectly shaped hybrid tea blooms so it is an outstanding cut flower. In fact, it will easily last 10 days in a vase when most garden varieties don’t have a hope of that.
The flower is described as a melody of raspberries, crushed currants and wine. Sounds delicious and they hold their magnificent colour.

As the name suggests the Grand Perfumed Collection showcases roses with a scent to die for. This winter, look out for Sister Emmanuelle TM Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Soeur Emanuelle TM’) with clusters of incredibly perfumed lilac pink flowers, it is a real winner.

Carmagnole TM Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Carmagnole TM’) is another beauty for your winter list and wonderfully sensual, with delicate ivory white flowers blushed with pink – just like strawberries and cream. It is a great floribunda for a loose hedge and very resistant to disease.

Roses from the Border and Terrace collection flourish on sun-washed stone terraces in France. Here they are perfect in pots on the patio or balcony.

Another new winter release to tease you, at just 70 cm tall, the BordureTM Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘BordureTM‘) is perfect for mass planting or bordering a garden bed or driveway. It is a brilliant repeat flowerer and very tough.

You can buy these incredible roses year round at your garden centre, but if getting into a nursery is not that easy the don’t worry because in winter Rankins Direct will deliver bare rooted roses straight to your door.
