What to Do - Colourful Waterwise Plants

Episode: #3 07/04/07
Presenter: Kim Syrus
If you want a garden that is both colourful and waterwise, then get ready for a real treat. There is a huge range of plants you can choose to help brighten up the yard. Wholesale nurseries like Poplar Grove at Sellicks Beach are bursting with a great selection, from good old fashioned favourites, right through to modern breeds.
If you want a bright, low spreading plant then check out the new Sun Kisses or Perennial Petunia (Calibrachoa Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Sun Kisses Group’). This outstanding perennial comes in a wide range of colours from bright orange, dazzling pink, cool silver, fiery red, to a striking deep blue.

When it comes to flowering Australian natives, Eremophila’s would have to be one of Kim’s first choices. So hardy and long bloomed, they need very little water. Kim knows of some very healthy Eremophila’s that have not been watered since last August, relying only on natural rainfall to keep them growing. Now that is tough!
There is plenty of water smart Eremophila’s to choose from. Emu Bush (Eremophila ‘Maculata Red’) has brilliant dark blooms dotted over a dense bush. The silvery foliage of the Emu Bush (Eremophila glabra ‘Marchinson Magic’) will add contrast to the yard while the purple blooms the Emu Bush (Eremophila macdonaldii) are bright and brilliant.
The new Trailing Snapdragon (Antirrhinum Hispanicum cv.) is absolutely covered in buds and bloom. Their low mounding habit makes them ideal for borders or even hanging baskets and they grow well in full sun or part shade.

A tough old favourite is the Blue Butterfly Bush (Clerodendrum ugandense). It is an evergreen shrub that flowers right through summer to early autumn. The trailing Red Riding Hood (Mandevilla Sanderi) is a continual mass of light red trumpet shaped blooms. It can be used as a climber or mounding shrub.
If you are looking for a no-nonsense climber then the Blue Royal Cape Plumbago (Plumbago auriculate) will be hard to go past. It is one of the hardiest plants going around and so versatile.
Kim loves visiting Poplar Grove, the wholesale nursery, to see how colourful and healthy all these plants look. Now is a great time to plant up your yard and with such a selection, there are no excuses. They are heading your way now, so check them out at your local garden centre.
