Pohlmans Indoor Plants – Your Garden Questions Answered
Episode: #3 07/04/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman
We have all heard claims that indoor plants can improve our health and we often get asked at the Garden Gurus, how does that work?
Well there is certainly no doubt that they are good company and there is also no doubt they bring a sense of cheer to the space which makes us feel good. There is, however, one thing they do that is a little less obvious.
Tests have shown that indoor plants actually remove a number of nasty compounds from the air; they call it ‘indoor air pollution’ and it is found nearly everywhere.
Some plants are said to be more effective than others like Peace Lilies (Spathiphyllum Hybrid Cultivar). They also make a terrific centrepiece as do ferns which are great fillers in any part of the house.
Any houseplant will help reduce indoor air pollution and let’s face it, at the end of the day they just look great.
An old favourite of Phil’s is the Rubber Tree (Ficus elastica cv.) which has some very exciting new colour contrasts. The one that Phil particularly likes at has gorgeous creams and pale greens which look absolutely beautiful. There are other Rubber Trees with amazing pinks and reds, creams and greens in the one leaf which is just stunning. As well as being spectacular they are extremely tough.
There is a great trend for colour in today’s houseplants and the new Angels Wings (Caladium bicolour) from the Pohlmans “Life Indoors” range are right on the money. The Angle Wings plant has luxuriant tones that come through; vibrant pink, green, white, burgundy and red with a range of foliage sizes too. What a great show!
If you really like colour then why not try a few Cordylines. They make super indoor plants too and of course the range of foliage colours available seems almost endless.
Speaking of colour, Pohlmans have come up with a terrific range of Coleus. You may not have thought of using them indoors before but they work beautifully. Check out the new range it is called Coleus Kong (Solenostemon scutellarioides cv. ‘Kong’) named for their huge leaves, collectors will love them. Also look out for Coleus Star (Solenostemon scutellarioides cv ‘Star’), it is a real beauty with a gorgeous velvety pink in the centre and a vibrant green on the tips.
A tiny investment in a few indoor plants can be a huge investment in your well being.
