Adelaide Airport

Episode: SA Waterwise Special – Our Changing Climate
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

As the prime gateway to South Australia, the Adelaide Airport is not only focused on providing comfortable, efficient and world class service to over 5 million passengers a year it is also proud to be Australia’s greenest airport.

The extensive landscape grounds throughout the airport are irrigated using reclaimed water from the Glenelg Wastewater Treatment Plant along with rainwater catchment from the roofs from many buildings throughout this precinct including Export Park and Harbour Town. A staggering 80 million litres of water has been saved by using these alternative water sources.

Low water use shrubs, grasses and ground covers have been selected for the dry land gardens. Not only is this consistent with sensible water practices it also helps promote Adelaide as the gateway to the outback.

As you can imagine large birds and planes do not mix too well, so to that extent they have discouraged too much birdlife. They have used trees that don’t grow any taller than 15 metres, have nice compact canopies and that don’t produce fruit, encouraging birds into the gardens.

Sustainable landscapes reclaimed water an excellent water outcome which means this airport will remain the green gateway for all South Australians.
