National Orchid Garden

Episode: Singapore Special
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

One of Singapore’s most stunning attractions is located in the heart of Singapore’s beautiful botanic garden.

Set atop the highest hill is the National Orchid Garden. It is a tropical gardening masterpiece and within it you will find over 400 species of orchids and over 2000 hybrids.

In all there are over 60,000 orchid plants on display at any one time and they have been cleverly integrated into a landscape that features amazing foliage plants and one of the world’s best bromeliad collections featuring over 20,000 plants and over 800 different species.

The gardens landscaping is spectacular and has been set up in colour codes to represent the seasons. Spring is represented by yellow, gold and cream. Winter, by blues and pure whites and Trevor fell in love with the plantings of dendrobium orchids particularly one called The Fairy and when planted on mass it really does look sensational.

Summer is a mixture of reds and pinks and autumn reflect the more mature shades. It is not obvious at first but becomes more evident as you stroll through the grounds.

The garden is at the forefront of orchid species hybridisation and it features state of the art breeding facilities. The mist house is home to the latest orchid species hybrids and it is one of the most spectacular Trevor has ever been in. It is presented in a natural setting with local, cultural décor.

Epiphytic or tree dwelling orchids are really commonly grown in the gardens and they work exceptionally well with the same type of bromeliads and also ferns; things like Staghorns and Elkhorns.

Growing in this type of environment they are able to take moisture and nutrients out of the atmosphere to sustain them. What is really brilliant about these is that they cover up old branches and add sensational foliage and flower colour to the garden.

One of the more amazing sections of the garden is the V.I.P garden that is located in and around the grounds of Burkilll house. Burkhill was one of the original garden directors and today it is home to one of the most prestigious orchid collections in the county. All the orchids have been named after visiting leading dignitaries and V.I.P’s.

Miss Agnes Joaquim, a Singaporean of Armenian descent, bred the worlds first cultivated Vanda Hydrid Orchid in the 1890’s and it was chosen as Singapore’s floral emblem in 1981 from a field of 40 worthy contenders.

If you have been to Singapore before and not visited the National Orchid Garden or you are looking for a good reason to come to this beautiful part of the world, then the orchid garden is a world class attraction and well worth a visit.
