Orchid Extravaganza

Episode: Singapore Special
Presenter: Melissa King

If there is one thing that a trip to Singapore is sure to inspire it is a love of orchids. It is the one flower, the world over that induces fanatical devotion so when it comes to showcasing these special plants, no one does it better than the Singapore Flower and Garden Festival.

The stunning landscape displays are the back drop to some 4000 cut orchids and 8000 orchid plants making it the largest orchid show ever staged in Singapore.

Orchids are incredibly diverse and to give you an idea there are some 20,000 wild species and on top of that over 100,000 registered hybrid species.

Among the enthusiasts who grow them, show judging is one serious business so it isn’t just a beautiful display, it is one serious competition.

So what is each orchid judged on?
In show judging it is all about showy, healthy plants and well presented flowers. In award judging the judges are looking for something new or exciting like size or the combination of colour in the bloom.

It is no one the orchid has admirers the world over and no where more so than in Singapore.
