Singapore Botanic Garden

Episode: Singapore Special
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Singapore’s Botanical Gardens
is one of the world’s most beautiful public gardens. Located in the heart of a tropical paradise, it is home to some of the most luxurious and exotic plant species on earth.

Now it doesn’t matter if you are a garden lover or you just enjoy a beautiful environment you can’t help but be captivated by the spectacular garden. The first garden was the vision of Sir Stanford Raffles, one of the countries founding for fathers and it was located at Fort Canning, which today is a spice garden.

The Modern garden was built in 1859, and it was such an inspiration world wide that in the 1950’s the Singapore Government decided to use is as the basis for turning Singapore into the “Garden City”.

Tropical foliage feature plants are everywhere and some of Trevor’s favourites make brilliant house plants including Tropicana Aglaonema (Aglaonema Hybrid ‘Tropicana’), a clumping compact foliage plant, and brilliant for pots.
Ti Tree’s or Cordyline Fruticosa Tricolour is another one; it is great indoors or outdoors in frost free environments. Caladiums like Angel Wings (Caladium bicolor) are actually bulbs and are some of the most beautiful foliage plants you can have indoors. You can’t discount using Variegated Dwarf Umbrella Trees (Schefflera arboricola ‘Variegata’) as they are almost indestructible and look great. Apart from that, they are also functional as they purify the air.
The garden is located just inside the bustling shopping district of Orchard Road. The tangling gate entrance has just undergone a massive refurbishment, the plants are spectacular, the water features are simply amazing and they have used mature trees which they have transplanted.
The botanical garden is great in the way that it can teach us how to better use plants in our own gardens.
It would be a sin not to go to the Ginger Garden, it is amazing. Tropical gingers are just so exotic they are really spectacular and when Torch Gingers are in flower on mass they are just amazing. It is not just the flowers it is also the foliage as it adds an exotic, tropical, lush ambience to any garden.
Another tropical flower that compliments the gingers are the Heliconias and just down the path from the national orchid centre you will find a spectacular collection of tropical plants. The most spectacular member of the Heliconia family has to be Sexy Pink (Heliconia chartacea ‘Sexy Pink’). The bad news is it is not going to grow if you live in a cold climate, unless you have a glass house.
The torch types of Heliconias or Parrot Flowers (Heliconia psittacorum cv.) can perform in temperate gardens as long as you don’t get freezing winters.
