Designer Gardens at Singapore Garden and Flower Show – UK Julian Dowle
Episode: Singapore Special
Presenter: Sue McDougall
Designed by Julian Dowle, one of the world’s most successful designers, The Chelsea Pensioners’ Garden celebrates peace 60 years after World War II.
Sue: What was the inspiration for the stunning garden?
Julian: We had a get together in the club in the Royal Hospital in Chelsea with about a dozen veterans from World War II and I asked them, what was your dream of Blighty when you were away at war?
One guy said, if I was doing a garden it has to have a tree in it because a tree saved his life; it took a bullet instead of him. Then they all started talking about the homeland, the countryside and the English country pub. One old chap at the back said “what a load of cobblers! All we thought about was women, women and women!”
It was lovely and as a result of that meeting we thought the English London pub in 1945 and how would they imagine it welcoming them home.
It is a piece of nostalgia that they were dreaming of and we can enjoy today.
