Designer Gardens at Singapore Garden and Flower Show – Australia Jim Fogarty

Episode: Singapore Special
Presenter: Neville Passmore

Neville fell in love with Jim Fogarty’s garden design at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in 2006 and it now looks like he is bringing a bit of Aussie back to Singapore.

As an international show, it was important to Jim to bring Australian plants and to do a garden that was really trying to reflect the culture of Australia.

The use of colours in the design is fantastic and a lot of the judges said that the Australians are really bold with the use of colour.

The Banksia light in the centre of the garden is inspired by the Banksia flower, with its orange and black stamens and its central green core. Little things that you pick up in the bush like the fluorescent fungus on gum trees was the inspiration for the background wall colour.

There is also the outback red gravel colours. Australia is very rich in its colours with the bright blue sky, the rivers and the billabongs and the outback and forest areas.

The garden consists of three areas; the ocean, the forest and the outback. The planting digresses from a sort of forest planting with the Eugenias and the Pandans and the grass trees. Then you have the more forest areas with the Wollemi Pines and the flaxes. There is also the more arid area which has some succulents, kangaroo paws, melaleucas and other similar things.

Jim Fogarty’s garden is a wonderfully unique take of an Australian garden in Singapore.
