Necessity is the mother of invention and the dry times we are experiencing right across the country calls for innovative ways to help our precious plants not only survive but actually take off and do well.

The Holmans Borby water tube acts as a funnel delivering water directly to the root zone. This can be used to help new shrubs or trees to become established, as well as existing plants in the landscape.
Installation is easy and here is how:
- Dig a hole with a trowel or bulb planter to the bottom of the root system of the shrub if it is new.
- You do not want to overshoot the depth, so cut the tube off with a saw to the required length, to match the depth of the pot.
- Avoid using a crowbar or post hole digger to create the hole as this compacts the soil around the edge reducing the infiltration of moisture. With larger existing trees you can use the full 40cm length.
- The tube is designed for heavy soils where the water fills up to the top. With sandy soil put some water saving crystals in the base to slow the movement through the base and encourage movement through the holes in the side.
- Water is applied till the tube is full and it is a direct supply right to the roots making use of every drop.
- You can also apply fertilizer into the tube knowing that everything is going to be used.
- Another way to use the Borby Tube is to feed a spaghetti tube through the wall of the tube for an underground reticulated direct deliver supply.
- Plug in a dribbler and adjust the spray so it fills the tube, and you will be under way.
So for tough times this is just what mother ordered an underground deep root watering system.
