Garden Express - Bulbs

Episode: #1 10/3/07
Presenter: Melissa King

Melissa just loves the anticipation of getting bulbs in the ground in autumn and then waiting for them to poke their noses through the soil.

Come spring, you do not want to be one of those people admiring all the daffodils, tulips and hyacinths in other people’s gardens, wishing you had planned ahead, so the best reminder is to get yourself on the mailing list for a bulb catalogue from Garden Express and do a bit of armchair gardening.

While you are waiting for the bulbs to arrive, you can get stuck into your soil preparation, by adding any composted materials or manures to the bed 4 to 6 weeks prior to planting, and it will be ready to go.

Mel has grown bulbs since she was just a kid, which goes to show how easy they can be to grow. They are water-wise little things – most surviving on nothing but winter rain, and most, you can plant and forget about and they will keep coming back again year after year.

You can plant your bulbs in big bold groups or among shrubs and perennials, plant them in grass or in drifts beneath deciduous trees, and if you only have a small garden then make the most of them in pots and containers.
Bulbs are incredibly well adapted. They are storage organs which enable them to retreat underground during tough periods of cold or drought. In fact, it is fascinating to chop a bulb open and take a look inside. Bulbs are perfect little self contained flowers. So with the first hint of water and cooling of the soil they spring into action.
You can plant bulbs in succession to guarantee months of colour, so when you are ordering your bulbs look to see if they are early-mid or late flowering varieties and pick a good selection so you can plan for a sustained display.

A few tips for buying bulbs….
A bulb should feel firm and full to touch and not squashy, dry or withered.

The good news is that when you mail-order your bulbs through Garden Express they are pre-graded and machine sorted first, then hand-picked, to ensure quality.

So get yourself a Garden Express Magazine and resist the temptation, have them delivered right to your front door!
