Court yard garden
Episode: WA Garden Gurus Special -
Summer Gardens
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
One of the biggest challenges a designer can ever face is creating a garden in a small location. That is why the courtyard garden featured, which is located in Cottesloe and only about 9x8 square metres is so impressive.
Created by Neil and Jenny Delmarge from Naturescape, it is absolutely beautiful. One feature that Trevor really loves is the dry rock wall, made of Toodyay stone. It really lifts the garden, creating a perception of greater depth than really exists.
From a purist point of view, the craftsmanship is incredible, with graduated contours and every stone perfectly placed.
Every great garden has a focal point and this one has many. The plants that have been selected are all spectacular at different times of the year not to mention the beautiful water feature, which is a major focal point all year round.
A stunning springtime feature is the gorgeous White flowering Wisteria (Wisteria floribunda ?Alba?). The pendula, sweetly fragrant flowers hang on mass, making a spectacular feature from inside the house.
The garden is also waterwise, using subsurface irrigation, snow stone gravel pathways and a great selection of waterwise plants such as the Magnolia Little Gem, Leopard Tree, Ornamental Pears, the Chinese Tallow Tree, the architectural Agaves, a white flowering Orchid Tree and stunning Dwarf Japanese Sacred Bamboo.
One of the things Trevor loves about the garden is the extensive use of plant species, there is such variety it is a real treat for the eye. A clever planting design is to use trees around the outside as it creates a micro climate, cooling the garden during summer and the sun in during the winter as the trees are deciduous.
It is a very clever design and a real treat for the visitor to the garden.
