Planting Winter Roses

Story Title: Planting Winter Roses
Episode: Nine
Date: May 1st 2010
Presenter:  Trevor Cochrane

Trevor stops to smell the roses and his fool proof guide on planting roses is guaranteed to produce a spectacular flush.

Tips:

  • One of the most cost effective ways to start a rose garden is buying bare rooted plants – these plants are field grown and dug in late autumn with early winter planting in mind. They represent excellent value as they cost half the price of pot grown specimens but you can only buy them in winter and you should be hunting from the first of June.
  • Sensational new releases you have to watch out for:
    • Blushing Pierre De Ronsard has creamy white petal filled old fashioned flowers – it's a climber ideal for covering arches or being tied upright to a post as a pillar rose.
    • Best Friend is a beautiful rich pink flower which is swirled in the classic style and held aloft of the plant on long stems. It has a magnificent fragrance and grows to about 1.5 metres high.
    • Fathers Love is a great one for that someone special, the flowers are rich dark red and thick velvety petals are saturated in a wonderful fragrance.
  • Growing these roses as bare rooted plants is easy. You can buy them via mail order or from leading nurseries. You need to plant them in a soil rich in organic matter, ideally a planting or potting mix that has some controlled release nutrients to stimulate the new roots growth.
  • You really should dunk your new bare rooted roses in a Seasol liquid concentrate solution for best results in settling in, and cover the new roots with good soil and give it a watering.
