Trevor waxes lyrical about the benefits of adding chickens to your backyard. Chickens not only provide tasty eggs, they're fantastic manure manufacturers and insect destroyers.

Tips:

• Cheap source of food – chickens provide an endless supply of eggs and we all know free range eggs taste the best.
  

• You don't need a huge backyard to house chickens. All you need is a 100m area and a small cage. This will hold about three birds.

• Chickens are easy to care for. They eat all your kitchen scraps and will consume most green waste from the garden.

• Create extra food by growing herbs such as Basella or Malabar spinach. This herb grows strongly during the dry season and its high iron content turns egg yolks a vibrant orange.
  

• Chickens reduce gardening bills. Their manure is a fantastic natural soil improver and all the nutrients are taken up by your plants unlike manufactured fertilisers.
  

• Forget insect sprays – chickens are incredible predators who hunt all types of insects.
